I enjoyed the beginning of the novel, but as I went on it did wane some; I think this was attributable to Lily - she started out exciting and interesting, but then fell into a lifeless copy of a generic married Chinese woman. I do think Lily was selfish throughout the novel, but on the otherhand I think that it was naive selfishess in which she didn't know any better. What women had she ever actually observed in a true, open relationship?
I liked Shanghai Girls more than this novel, but I liked the attention to cultural detail and the reluctance to "Westernize" every one's actions. Although I disagree with many practices, I think I gained understanding of the reasoning and thinking behind these ways.
